ORBS (The Overseas Recorded Broadcasting Service) was set up in World
War Two as part of ENSA to provide recorded entertainment to the forces
stationed in Britain. The majority of these are in the form of 15 or 30
minute radio shows taken from, or based upon, BBC transmissions. The original records rarely turn up and, as far as I know, have not been documented anywhere until now. This page is an attempt to list the known items and send out a plea for more information. While I am interested in obtaining the original records (if they are interest to me from a dance band perspective, I am also very interested in the information and maybe tape/CD transfers of records in your own collections. I am also happy to collaborate to help to complete programs. There are two distinct types: those in the radio show format (labelled "Services Calling" or sometimes "ENSA Calling" or just O.R.B.S), the others are studio recordings labelled "Services Library". I shall list these library records at the end of this list. I am listing the records alphabetically by radio show. This seems to be the best way I can think of. The issue numbers mentioned on some sides are only shown in the run-off areas of the discs and not on the labels. Most of the recordings and/or pressings were done by E.M.I., but other companies were called upon to help the war effort and these can be recognised by the matrix number prefixes as follows:
2EN - E.M.I. There may be others I've not seen, as there are thousands of these records.
As usual, if you can help with extra
information, please
email me. Thank you to the following people for providing extra details: Gary Scott |
