British Perfect – UK matrix-series Dance Band Recordings

A British series of matrix numbers from N-95210 upwards were allocated to a number of dance band recordings issued on English Perfect in 1928. It is now generally thought that these were French recordings that were given English matrix numbers, either in France, or when pressed in London. They have generally been omitted from the Rust/Forbes discography because of this, so here is the first listing that brings them all together.

So, which bands did make the recordings? According to Daniel Nevers & Oliver Brard in their publications of French dance bands and Jazz, the first session seems to be by Leo Poll and his Orch (the four blues numbers) and Robert Avignon & his Orch (the others, plus possibly the isolated "Ain't That A Grand And Glorious Feeling"). The rest of the sessions seem to be all by Lud Gluskin and his Orchestra (labelled correctly on two issues!). The vocalist, where shown is John Thorne.

NOTES:  “Souvenirs” is also issued on Pathe Actuelle 11508 as Casino Dance Orchestra. Some copies of P-315 use an American master by The California Ramblers. It is not know which masters are used on the PA issue. 

The blank matrix numbers have not yet been traced, but there are still some Perfect catalogue numbers that also haven’t been traced. However, it’s always likely that some matrix numbers were rejected and some catalogue issues may also have been cancelled. The gaps between the matrix number ranges are generally filled by solo vocal performances, usually by John Thorne, issued as by Gilbert Austin.

Matrix numbers prior to 95210 are actual English recordings, recorded acoustically.

Perfect catalogue numbers not yet traced are: P-327, P-328, P-335, P-336, P-432 and any higher than P-435. Note also that the matrix numbers for P-377 are not yet known; this could be another French recording.
