violinist. Born: 1898 Died: 1983 In the autumn of 1928 Al was appointed as musical director of the Hammersmith and Birmingham Palais de Dance. At the time, he was sharing the musical duties at Hammersmith with Alan Green. However, he replaced Green's band with a small one of his own called "The New Dixie Band". This comprised P. Franks, trumpet; Jack Jones, trombone; Ike Levine, alto-sax; H. White, piano; Ginger Conn, drums. This combination didn't make any records. Tabor's main band, also playing at Hammersmith, as it had done since at least 1926, did make a few records, listed below. Al played at the Hammersmith Palais from 1926 until March 1929 when he moved to play at Murray's Club in Beak Street. He stopped playing in
the early sixties, and worked for the B.B.C. forwarding royalties for
the music they played. |
