Neophone records were the launched in 1903 by Dr William Michaelis. Michaelis (a doctor of philology) and his brother Alfred had been founder managers of The Gramophone Company's Italian branch, in Milan. At around the same time that William Michaelis started up Neophone. his brother, Alfred started Fonotipia records (or, more correctly, Societa Italiana di Fonotipia). Initially, the Neophone company (as Neophon) was based in Baden, Germany, but moved to London (England) in 1904. The company was registered at 149-153, Roseberry Avenue, London.
Neophone's recording expert was Percival James Packman, who was already running his own company of Pioneer Records (which sold cylinders under this name) at the address above. The company styled itself as The Neophone Disc Phonograph Company. In Europe, a phonograph referred to cylindrical records, but Neophone discs used the same vertical-cut grooving as cylinders. This may have been due to Packman's expertise, or preference for this type of cut. Neophones were the first vertical cut (also known as phono-cut or hill-and-dale) records to be sold in Britain, though the groove style was never to gain much popularity here.
The manufacturing of the early Neophone records is slightly bizarre. In Michaelis' patent, it is described thus: "The discs are pressed by applying three or more coats of enamel mixed with boric acid to smoothly prepared surfaces of pulp, papier mache or the like". This sounds laborious when compared to the normal stamping out or other records of the period, and may be one explanation why early Neophone records are extremely scarce.
Neophone records (all single-sided) were initially available in two sizes: 7½" at 6d each, and 10½" at 1/- each (sizes are nominal). In 1905, they added 9" and 12" sizes to this. 20" discs, selling for 10/6, were introduced in August 1905, along with a home disc recording outfit selling for £1 10s. Shortly after this, the 7½" & 10½" sizes were dropped. Despite the odd manufacturing process, press reports imply that records were made and sold in quite large quantities. In late 1905 the company moved to 1, Worshiop Street, London and reported they were producing 6,000 discs each day!
By February 1906 there were 7 types of disc on sale, in three sizes (all single-sided):
         9":  standard @ 6d, Grand Opera @ 1/-, Grand Opera "Autograph" @ 2/6.
       12": standard a@ 1/-, standard with metal rims @ 1/6, Grand Opera @ 2/-, Grand Opera "Autograph" @ 5/-.
       20" @ 10/6.
The metal rims were presumably to protect the enamel laminated edge and the Autograph discs presumably had the artiste's autograph in the record's surface.
In June 1906, Neophone records started to be made of "Neolite", a solid black material which appears to be very similar to the material used by other record companies of the time. The first Neolite records were 12" and double-sided, costing 3/-. The existing single-sided enamel discs continued to be made as cheaper alternatives until about November 1906 when the 12" became only available in the new Neolite material. Also by now Henry Klein had become the recording expect; Packman having resigned in May 1906. By April 1907, only three types of Neophone discs were being advertised: 9" cardboard (presumbly the old enamel process) @6d; 12" Neolite @3/- and 20" double-sided @15/-.
In July 1907, Neophone Ltd was sold to the General Phonograph Company Ltd, the managing director of which was James White. This company was producing the 2-minute gold-moulded White Records (cylinders) but had been experimenting with producing an 11" gold-moulded disc record. This latter experiment now came to fruition but were sold as Neophone "White System" gold moulded records, selling at 3/- each, with a lilac coloured label.
In the spring of 1908, the General Phonograph Company, along with the Neophone Company were liquidated and no further records were made. The liquidater reported that there were 7,780 double-sided Neolite discs ready for sale, along with 3,600 cardboard discs of various sizes ranging from 9" to 20".

Neophone records, to this day, are very rare, the enamel ones are even scarcer, and all fetch high prices when they come up for auction. Many of the records carry labels which don't detail what is on the record itself; this information is only inscribed into the surface of the record outside the label area. This makes me speculate that despite the company reports of high numbers being produced, many may have been manufactured to order. The catalogue was huge (see below) and it is not unusual to find the double sided records with different couplings.

This is my interpretation of Frank Andrews' Neophone history, published in 1978 in "The Talking Machine Review", No. 51.
I have attempted to simplify Frank's rather had-to-access details, but any corrections or additions are welcome.

The listings here are transcribed from Frank Andrews' monumental work in "Talking Machine Review", issues 54-55, 56-57 & 59. Bearing in mind how scarce Neophone records have always been, I suspect most of the details came from various catalogues and trade magazines. Hence, as well as there being some missing information still (Frank himself describes it as an incomplete listing), there may well be differences between the published information and what was actually issued on record. I would therefore be very grateful for any input from collectors who have any Neophone records in their collections.

*** Important **** Any Neophone discs seen or reliably reported to me (preferably with images for proof) will be annotated with * before the master number.

Please e-mail me if you have any additions or corrections to this page.

I shall list the various series in numerical order  rather than in the order they were released. None of the double-sided issues have catalogue numbers common to both sides, so I shown the coupling numbers where appropriate. I have given the known record sizes in inches, though I believe some were advertised in centimetres.

First up is the 1000 series. These were recorded (and made?) in Germany. All single-sided 12" size.

I have included the solitary No. 2046 here, which was actualy issued in September 1904 and is a single sided issue.

This next section is quite big: the 16100 range. These are various sizes, as noted, and were originally single-sided, but some were later coupled.
Some explanantion is required about my notations: Any numbers with a (2) after the number just means it is the second time that number has been used, the suffix is not on the record. Any with a "-c" suffix means that it is the coupling of the unsuffixed number, but that the actual number isn't known. This  occurs on the later numbers once they start issuing double sided records regularly.

Now we're on to the 17000 series.
These are all 12" duplex, pressed in Neolite. Neophone still didn't use a catalogue number common to both sides and the numbers of many of the coupled sides are not known, though the titles are, so, as explained before, a number with a "-c" suffix is my notation for a side where the number of that side isn't known, only the number of the side it is coupled with.
