|
Perfect records were quite short-lived in Britain. It was introduced in late 1927 and was available for about a year. The masters were from almost all from American and French Pathe. Only a few, early on, were were recorded in England, and they were acoustic. A number of masters with English matrix numbers (N90000 series) were used throughout Perfect's life, but these were all recorded in France specially for the label, and, as far as I know, unavailable anywhere else. The Catalogue number started at P-300 and ceased at P-435. Columbia bought the company in 1928 and some of the last few Perfects may be found pressed by Columbia, with smooth laminated surfaces playing beautifully. |

Perfect – UK matrix-series Recordings
A
British series of just over 100 matrix numbers from N-95210 upwards were allocated to
a number of dance band recordings issued on English Perfect in 1928. It
is now known that these were French recordings recorded specifically for
the English market, that were
given English matrix numbers, either in France, or when pressed in
London. They have generally been omitted from the Rust/Forbes
discography because of this, so here is the first listing that brings
them all together.
So,
which bands did make the recordings? According to Daniel Nevers
& Oliver Brard in their publications of French dance bands and Jazz,
the first session seems to be by Leo Poll and his Orch (the four blues
numbers) and
Robert Avignon & his Orch (the
others, plus possibly the isolated "Ain't That A Grand And
Glorious Feeling"). The rest of the
sessions seem to be all by Lud Gluskin and his Orchestra (labelled
correctly on two issues!). The vocalist, where shown is John Thorne
(annotated as vJT). NEW April 2014: Just to try and be more complete here, I have added the known non-dance band recordings to this listing. These are shown in pale blue. |
