"The King Of Records" first appeared in September 1933. It was a quality record at a cheap price (1/-) produced by Crystalate and sold in Marks & Spencer's stores. The catalogue series started at 8001, reaching over 10220 by February 1948 when the last ones appeared. The matrix series started (for some reason) at F-500. American masters from ARC were liberally used, generally under pseudonyms such as Hollywood Dance Orchestra or Ed Lloyd and his Band (for dance records). Jay Wilbur was the studio director, but top name bands were also featured, such as Jack Payne, Charlie Kunz, Billy Cotton, Brian Lawrance and Jack Simpson. In March 1937, Decca took over Crystalate and the F- matrix series changed to R- with the same numbering.  Decca also used the R-series on its main Decca issues, but with a DR-prefix, continuing with this series up to the end of 78rpm issues.

Apart from the main 8000 series, there were others; thanks to Jerry King for his help on these:

15000 Irish Series (not sure why they had two Irish series)
60000 series. Possibly for export, though if so, the destination is not known.
U-200 Northern Irish series (green label, gold printing) - see image
X-1000 religious series
C.W.1   Special (one-off?) for Clifford Watkins (see image right).

Label styles (see images at right).
Style 1: With the "closed in" Lions.                Highest I have is 8018
Style 2: Used for the longest period.              Highest I have is 9224
Style 3: Briefly in the mis 9200 period.         Highest I have is 9260
Style 4: Up to the high 9900s.                          Highest I have is 9957
Style 5 - A return of the earlier style just briefly in the high 9900 period.
The label then reverts to style 4 up to about 10100 (highest I have is 10087)
Style 6: A complete change of design used uyp to the end.

Apart from style 6 (and the specials mentioned below) the standard 8000 series was gold printing on a very dark blue, near black, background. However, there are some, possibly due to wartime restrictions, which are printed on a dark brown or black background, and some with a mauve background. These are in the Style 4 and 5 designs.

There were also two special designs used to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee in 1936, and the following year to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI. I don't know if the images shown are the only numbers using these labels, perhaps you could let me know!

Dave Mason has sent me the final image (so far) shown right. I have had to mess with the balance to get it to be readable, unfortunatley. It is thought this may be a one-off, but obviously if anyone should find any more odditities, I would be interested in images.

Acknowledgements for this listing to Jim Hayes, who published a Rex listing in artist sequence back in 1974, with many new additions from Jerry King.
I have added a "source" column which will generally show the US original label & issue, though some Rex records are re-issues of UK Imperial records, or earlier Rex and English Decca records.

Some of the original Rex recording dates are taken from files held by Decca and are descibed as "Despatch Dates", which means they may be a few days after the actual recording date.

Please e-mail me if you have any additions or corrections to this page.
Thanks to the following who have provided extra details: Bill Dean-Myatt, Bob Hill, Alexander Kozak, Stefan Mansier, Tony Middleton
