Sterno records were a
product of the British Homophone Company between 1926 and 1935. They were
named after William Sternberg whose company had already been selling
gramophones under the trade name "Sterno" for some years. The first Sterno records (see first picture) are now very scarce. They were recorded and pressed by The Gramophone Company and are a quality product, with most dance records being by a studio band directed by Bert Firman, and well recorded electrically, too. As far as is known, all of these first Sternos were also issued on Homochord too. The catalogue numbers started at S-101, and ran until about S-174 (the highest reported to me so far), so they were only around from about July 1926 until October 1926. As I said before, they are scarce and more information on them would be gratefully received. The second (and more permanent) appearance of Sterno records was in 1928 (see second label). These were recorded in British Homophone's new studios and pressed at the old Pathe factory in Barry Road, Stonebridge Park, West London. (Columbia had just bought the Pathe comapny and sold the factory to British Homophone in 1928). Oddly, the recordings sound similar to those previously recorded by Pathe in France, which I don't quite understand as it can't be the same equipment. The records are generally very smooth, but the recordings are quite "tubby"; heavy on the bass and with not much "top", at least initially. The main outlet for these records was Marks And Spencers, but they were generally available. They were priced at 1/6, putting them firmly into the "budget" range of records. The musical director at British Homophone was Nat Star and he used virtually the same musicians as Stan Greening at Columbia and Harry Bidgood at Vocalion. In fact both Greening & Bidgood took part in many of Star's sessions. The band played mainly stock arrangements in a rather old-fashioned, but straightforward manner. However the records were cheap and sold well. The recording quality was very variable for the next few years, but by 1931, it was much improved and by 1933-4 some good "name" bands recorded for Sterno, such as Sydney Lipton, Charlie Kunz, Billy Merrin & Oscar Rabin. Despite the cheapness, and fairly good quality, the later Sternos can be very hard to come by. However, the early 1930s wa a hard time for most businesses and record companies were particularly hard-hit as many people could get their music fox from the radio once the commercial radio stations started broadcasting in about 1934. The last Sternos were produced in mid-1935 and in June 1935 HMV & Decca jointly bought the entire commercial record side of the company and British Homophone continues afterwards just pressing records for other companies and for private use. The vast majority of Sternos are British electrical recordings, with occasionally a few continental ones. In the early period, some old acoustic masters from Homophon, Homochord and U.S. Vocalion were used, some of these dating from pre-WWI. The catalogue numbers of the red Sterno label started at 101 and ran until the early 1600s. Towards the end there were 6-minute 10" Sternos with a magenta label rather than red (occasionally some of the late red-labelled series had magenta labels also). The long-playing Sterno was short lived, and very little in the way of dance records appeared on it. (see left). The catalogue numbers were in a 5000 series. This series obviously replaced (or was replaced by) the popular "4 in 1" label (q.v.). In addition, there was a 12" series using 8000 catalogue numbers and also Irish, Scottish & Sacred series. There were also other foreign series which I will list here if I receive any details of them. |
Thank you to the following people who have provided additional information: Rod Alltoft, Frank Andrews, Richard Bloomfield, Graham Bowden, Duncan Brand, Paul Buck, Greg Butler, Paul Cleary, Gill Davies, Bill Dean-Myatt, Graham Farnell, Norman Field, Robert Girling, Charles Hippisley-Cox, Wayne Ivany, Alexandros Kozak, Mike Langridge, Colin MacKenzie, Pat Malham, Paul McMaster, Albert Pattison, Tony Preece, Richard Prout, John Rogers, Beverley Rowley, Mark Stephens, Michael Turley.
Thanks to the late Arthur Badrock's archive, I am able to produce a fairly complete list of the various Sterno series. I'm still missing some matrix numbers, though.
First: all the currently known issues in the early S- series,
mostly from Frank Andrews. Any
additions welcome, along with confirmation of many of the labelled artists.
All dance band items are actually by Bert Firman's Dance Orchestra.
